Psychologist David Elkins had modest ambitions for his petition. He and his colleagues were worried that proposed changes to an influential handbook of mental disorders could classify normal behaviours as psychological conditions, potentially leading to inappropriate treatments. So they laid out their concerns in an open letter, co-sponsored by five divisions of the American Psychological Association in Washington DC. “I thought, ‘Well, maybe we’ll get a couple or maybe 30 signatures’,” says Elkins, an emeritus professor at Pepperdine University in Malibu, California.

But the letter, posted online on 22 October (go.nature.com/uhmvqq), touched a nerve.

In a study conducted by Pluristem Therapeutics ($PSTI) and Texas A&M Health Science Center College of Medicine, researchers found that the Israel-based developers PLacental eXpanded (PLX) cells effectively improved several parameters of preeclampsia in animal models.

Preeclampsia occurs in approximately 6% to 8% of pregnancies worldwide, according to the World Health Organization.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — For the last four weeks of your training, youve consistently and patiently built up your endurance. Your body has undergone gradual adaptations as youve increased your cardio base.

So where do you go from here?

Speed.

If you want to try and pick up your pace in the Advances 4-Mile Memorial Day Run, youll need to add a speed workout this week and next week. (If youre more concerned with just finishing the race, weve got you covered with an alternate workout for Wednesdays speed session.)

Generally, runners can improve their speed by landing on the balls of their feet as opposed to the heel or mid-foot when they race.

The warmer weather really does spur some sort of longing to be thinner, more lithe and active stronger if you will. I just have this real desire and totally unshakable ambition to tone up, slim down and become healthy again.

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — Michael Amoroso is looking for the rarest of kidney donors an altruistic one. That is, someone who parts with one of their kidneys for someone unrelated, even unknown.

The Graniteville man is one of 8,000 people in New York state waiting for a kidney transplant, according to the National Kidney Foundation.

As reported by the foundation, the majority of organ donors are understandably motivated to donate to a relative. Of the 5,600 people to make a living organ donation last year, it notes, only 1,250 were altruistic donors.

The kidneys are fist-sized organs on either side of the back just below the rib cage that filter waste products from the blood which are then removed with extra fluid through the urine.

Researchers from Yale University might have stumbled across an unlikely treatment for melanoma. Using in vitro and animal models, vesicular stomatitis virus–a zoonotic virus in the same family as rabies–killed melanoma cells while leaving noncancerous cells virtually unscathed. Researchers think this is because most normal cells resist virus infection by activating antiviral processes that protect nearby cells. Melanoma is the most dangerous of skin cancers, with a mortality rate of about 75% of skin-cancer-related deaths. The incidence rate has tripled over the last three decades. The research was published online in the Journal of Virology. R

A new kind of ovarian cancer vaccine has shown hope for many patients who normally face a relapse after getting treated for the condition. This is a new kind of medical immunotherapy, which has shown a good, progressive response to the treatment with patients getting total remission. Most of the patients who received this treatment mode showed immediate response and proved many researches true. Thus there is a small revolution in the world of ovarian cancer.

These clinical findings were presented in the Penn Medicine Ovarian Cancer Research Centre this April. This ovarian cancer vaccine procedure has two steps.

The project was funded by a grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Pioneer Portfolio through its national program, Health Games Research. The results suggests that “gamification” may improve the effectiveness of traditional health interventions for motivating behavior change and can lead to better health outcomes.

For the ten-week program, researchers studied young and middle-aged adults across a range of lifestyles, from sedentary to very active. Study participants invited someone they knew, usually friends or family members, to participate with them.

One group of participants was randomly assigned to keep an online diary of physical activity, a commonly used strategy for activity adherence and weight management.

Each can improve brain functions and decrease risks of cognitive decline over time. This raises the question of their comparative and combined effects: Is one better than the other? Are their benefits additive (1 + 1 =2) or perhaps even synergistic (1 + 1 =3)?

A recent study suggests that the benefits of each are significant and roughly equivalent but not synergistic (meaning, that aerobic exercise didn’t make mental exercise more effective, or vice versa). The study involved 126 older adults (mean age of 73.4) with cognitive complaints, that is who felt their memory and thinking skills had declined in the recent past. Participants were divided onto 4 groups:
